I have always leaned toward the sciences. I taught science and chemistry for close to thirty years. However, I have a longstanding admiration for artists and their work. During my years teaching, I quickly realized that teaching is more of an art than science. Now that I am retired, I get to show my creativity in a more tangible way - through woodworking. I have loved to work with wood ever since my seventh grade shop teacher opened up the possibilities to me.
My medium is of course hardwood. After retirement I purchased a small sawmill because I had a large number of trees on my property that were damaged by the Cameron Peak Wildfire. The Black Locust and a small amount of Black Walnut were some of the damaged trees. I also have used Curly Maple, Ambrosia Maple, Purpleheart, Cherry, white oak, Oak, Paduak, and more.
My inspiration comes from the natural beauty of the wood as well as the time I spend outdoors. Some of it comes from my commercial fishing days as well. I see landscapes and fish all throughout my pieces.
